Showing Up

Longtime friends Miranda and Vanessa dream of leaving small-town America to become the “Matt Damon and Ben Affleck of Broadway,” all while raising two children each in adjoining brownstones—preferably in matching outfits. But the harsh realities of adult life in the big city test their friendship, resilience, and creativity to the limits.

This semi-semi autobiographical musical, best described as Broad City meets The Last Five Years, explores motherhood, identity, and friendship with humor and a vibrant score. Showing Up is a heartfelt and hilarious celebration of the strength it takes to show up—for ourselves and each other.

Development History

Showing Up has received developmental support from The Montclair Theatre Project and The Town Hall Theater in Vermont, the writers’ home state. The musical enjoyed a sold-out run at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater in 2021, where Vanessa and Miranda originated the lead roles.

In January 2024, Showing Up was workshopped by musical theater students at Princeton University and Middlebury College. The writers are currently planning a NYC concert performance and exploring a short regional theater run as the next developmental steps, alongside additional college workshops this winter.
